Autotrans building

Location: Vareš

Importance of the locality:

From December 1993 to March 1994, the Autotrans building in Vareš was used as a detention site for Croats. Prisoners of war were moved to the Autotrans building from the Secondary School Centre in Vareš. ARBiH had jurisdiction over the facility. There were 32 prisoners detained in the building. They were confined in one basement room that was small, damp and dark, and the prisoners were packed in “like sardines”. Visits were permitted. The prisoners were forced to dig trenches. They were taken to do forced labour mostly at night. On such occasions they would sleep in abandoned log cabins and houses.
